Description

19th Century Lakota (Sioux) Archery Collection – Dakota Territory
Description: A professionally assembled ethnographic collection of Native American archery implements, primarily Lakota (Teton Sioux), dating to the late 19th century. This group represents a diverse survey of Northern Plains weaponry and hunting tools. Bows (4): Features a high-performance sinew-backed reflex horse-bow alongside three hardwood self-bows (likely Ash). Each displays a deep, original patina and structural integrity consistent with period use. Arrows (23): A varied cache of smooth, un-grooved shafts (15”–27”) featuring authentic animal sinew-attached fletching. Projectile points include: Trade Metal: Iron/steel triangular points showing evidence of historical field-sharpening or early collection maintenance as well as newer, still bright edges. Lithic & Blunt: One traditional stone-tipped arrow and several carved wooden stunning blunts for small game. Quiver: A traditional soft-tanned fringed buckskin quiver with original carrying strap; leather remains supple with characteristic field aging. Provenance: One stunning/blunt arrow is inscribed in period ink: “Wounded Knee Creek, Atola”, identifying the collection site and the associated locality within the South Dakota region. Condition Report: Good to very good historical condition. Sinew bindings remain tight and stable. The bows show expected surface wear. Arrows exhibit varying fletching wear and oxidation to metal points consistent with age. Please see photos.
