Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2210:
Description
This 17-inch pewter platter is a quintessential piece of early Americana, presenting the classic wide-rimmed style favored during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The reverse features a compelling handwritten legend in black ink stating the piece was “Brought over on the Mayflower,” and was later gifted to Mrs. Naomi Shoup Harkness on November 17, 1920. The two distinct touchmarks—stamped as a rose-and-crown within a shield—are indicative of high-quality English pewter, a mark frequently used by London and provincial pewterers to signify quality. The platter exhibits a deep, aged patina with significant character, showing numerous surface scratches, pitting, and oxidation consistent with centuries of utility. An objective inspection reveals a notable stress crack or deep gouge near the interior rim, along with heavy residue and staining on the base. H 1″, W 17″, D 17″. Please see photos for condition.
