Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2205:
Description
A quintessential piece of Mexican-American War history, this Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber was produced by the famed Ames Manufacturing Company of Cabotville, Massachusetts. The 32-inch curved steel blade is unsharpened and remarkably preserved, free of any nicks or cuts. The obverse ricasso bears the clear three-line strike “N.P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1847,” while the reverse is stamped “US / S.K.” for inspector Samuel Knotant. The brass D-guard and pommel cap, stamped with inspector initials “J.W.R.” (John W. Rice) and “R.C.”, exhibit a rich, uncleaned patina. This lot includes the original steel scabbard and a buff leather hanger assembly with an unmarked brass “US” buckle. The leather is untreated with a suede-like texture, remaining exceptionally supple and pliable, which can indicate superior preservation or a high-quality historical reproduction. The blade shows light age-peppering but remains bright, and the scabbard is straight and free of detrimental dents. The leather grip and wire wrap are tight and fully intact. H 37″, W 4″, D 3″.
