Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2201:
Description
This stamped brass insignia is a classic 1858 Pattern eagle plate, commonly known as a “Hardee Hat” plate, which served as the standard headgear adornment for Union enlisted men during the American Civil War. The piece features the iconic spread-winged eagle motif with a patriotic shield and a “glory” of stars above a flowing scroll. The eagle is missing the olive branches and arrows typically held in its talons. The item is in “dug” condition, exhibiting heavy oxidation, caked-on soil, and a deep, encrusted patina. There is significant structural damage, including a horizontal break across the left wing at the shield level and loss of material at the left wing tip. H 2.5″, W 2″. Please see photos for condition.
