Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2179:
Description
This striking piece is a classic example of Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) raised beadwork, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Crafted for the Victorian tourist trade, this “souvenir” bag features vibrant translucent and opaque glass seed beads in traditional floral and foliate motifs set against a dark chocolate velvet ground with a contrasting red border. The interior reveals a pink fabric lining, and the piece is finished with a simple velvet strap and delicate white bead edging. The beadwork remains remarkably tight and intact across both faces, though there is visible fraying and light wear along the red ribbon edging and minor fading to the velvet consistent with age. H 5.25″, W 4.75″. Please see photos for condition.
