Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2171:
Description
This fascinating historical grouping includes a primitive stone pestle and a pair of hand-stitched leather moccasins. The pestle is expertly shaped from speckled granite with a unique concave striking head, designed for specialized grinding tasks. Accompanying it is a pair of authentic soft-sole moccasins, likely crafted from buckskin or elk hide, featuring a center-seam construction, simple thong lacing, and a striking red cloth interior lining. These pieces represent essential utilitarian items of early frontier or Indigenous life. The stone pestle is in very good antique condition with minor surface pitting. The moccasins show significant signs of historical wear, including darkening of the leather, stiffening, and a visible hole in the sole of the left shoe, adding to their authentic character. H 3.5″, W 5″, D 11.25″. Please see photos for condition.
