Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2109:
Description
This assemblage is anchored by artifacts that define the post-Civil War American West. The three iron trade arrowheads (3.5″ to 4.25″) are quintessential frontier commerce items used well into the late 19th century. The blue glass trade bead fragment from Leavenworth further supports this “outpost” provenance. Within the 6″ x 5″ Ryker mount, the presence of crossed musket insignia (adopted in 1875 to replace the earlier horn) and the inert metallic cartridge strongly point toward the Indian Wars era. While the Eagle Buttons from makers like Horstmann and Waterbury were produced during the Civil War, they remained standard issue for frontier troops for decades afterward. Condition is consistent with authentic “dug” recovery: heavy oxidation on iron, a deep chocolate patina on the brass, and a notched 1829 Large Cent that likely served as a pioneer-era pendant. H 6″, W 5″, D 1″. Please see photos.
