Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2099:
Description
This substantial 91-piece (approx.) assemblage offers a comprehensive survey of prehistoric tool-making, featuring an array of North American projectile points and lithic tools likely spanning from the Archaic to the Mississippian periods. The collection showcases a diverse typology including side-notched, corner-notched, and triangular “bird points,” alongside several stemmed dart tips and bifacial scrapers. The materials are particularly striking, highlighting the geological variety of the Midwest and Plains with examples of Burlington chert, multi-colored jasper, and semi-translucent chalcedony. The craftsmanship varies from fine pressure-flaking to utilitarian percussion-knapping, providing a fantastic cross-section of ancient technology. Most points are in excellent condition with intact tips and bases, though some exhibit minor prehistoric use-wear or natural edge nibbling; note that the Riker display mount is for photographic reference only and is not included in the sale.
