Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2063:
Description
This significant collection of Western cutlery is led by a rare 19th-century trade-style knife etched with “G.C. Belmont” and “Pueblo Colo.” in a flourishing script. G.C. Belmont was a noted hardware merchant in Pueblo during the late 1800s, and this piece represents a high-water mark for localized frontier tools. The lot includes an authentic Hudson’s Bay Company trade knife with its characteristic rounded tip—a design favored for its versatility in the fur trade—alongside a triple-riveted carbon steel hunting knife. Most intriguing is the hand-carved wooden knife template, which bears an old red-bordered paper collection label marked “#136 Schoen,” likely referencing the specialized collection of a historical cutlery scholar. All items show an honest, heavy patina of use, including surface oxidation, pitting on the carbon steel, and typical age-related wear to the bone/horn and wood handles.
