Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2033:
Description
This mid-century hand-carved wooden duck decoy represents the quintessential “working bird” aesthetic, likely originating from the North American flyway tradition. The piece features a solid wood construction, likely cedar or pine, with a classic high-head pose and hand-painted plumage in shades of black, olive, and cream. A close inspection of the underside reveals heavy wood graining and circular remnants where a keel or lead weight was once mounted. While the user notes what appears to be a faint signature or maker’s mark, it has been largely obscured by time and wear. The item is in well-loved, field-used condition, displaying significant paint loss, abrasions to the wood, and age-related drying cracks, yet it retains its glass eyes and structural integrity. H 5.75″, W 6″, D 14.75″ Please see photos.
