Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2021:
Description
This collection features eleven hand-carved bone implements, primarily fashioned as “one-piece” fish hooks and specialized harpoon-style points. These pieces showcase the utilitarian artistry of coastal indigenous cultures, likely inspired by Pacific Northwest or Arctic maritime traditions. Crafted from dense animal bone or antler, the assortment includes various “U” and “J” shaped hooks designed for snagging and bait-holding, along with two distinct multi-barbed leister points used for fishing spears. Each item displays a smooth, hand-polished finish and traditional notched shanks for cordage attachment. Ranging in size from 1″ to 2.75″ in length, the collection is in excellent vintage condition, exhibiting a natural cream-to-tan aged patina with only minor surface wear and no structural fractures. H 5″, W 4″, D 0.5″. Please see photos.
